Chuseok is one of the most important holidays of the year. It’s a time for families to gather and honor their ancestors, and it’s become a huge event for those who celebrate it. Many people travel and buy extravagant gifts for loved ones during this time, while others are happy simply to spend time with the people that they care about. With the advent of COVID-19, Koreans are having to celebrate differently this year - but people are still making the most of the holiday!

Celebrating Chuseok, Korean Thanksgiving
In Korea, COVID-19 has led to the government putting restrictions in place to prevent the continued spread of the virus. However, with many Koreans getting the coronavirus vaccine, restrictions related to social distancing, curfews, and in-person visits have been eased. As such, many Koreans are able to spend time with their family during Chuseok, or visit traditional villages.
For those who are unable to visit their hometowns or are choosing not to for safety reasons, they are still able to make the best of their situations. Local street markets have been very popular as people buy traditional food and other things to prepare for the holiday. Volunteers have also been helping the underprivileged enjoy Chuseok by preparing songpyeon - a crescent-shaped rice cake - to give to them.
Traditional games are also a huge part of Chuseok, and luckily, they can be played no matter where you are. Families and friends have been participating in outdoor workshops where they can play traditional games such as and yut; showing that even with COVID-19, people are still able to have a fun and enjoyable holiday!
